Misinformation Gaza
“Occupation Gaza” is a thought-provoking artwork that delves into the complex and devastating conflict in Gaza, highlighting the hypocrisy of the western world in reconciling the occurrence of genocide by one of its allies..
The artwork symbolises the nature of the conflict through the depiction of an Israeli soldier standing over the Palestinians. Daryl’s view of the conflict is summarised by a game of chess vs checkers with Israel representing chess and Palestine representing checkers. This metaphor emphasises the stark power imbalance and the unequal consequences suffered by the innocent lives caught in the crossfire.
The chess side represents Israel who is backed by the USA and it’s allies, with its strategic moves and calculated decisions through money, power, politics and arms. It signifies the geopolitical interests and political considerations that often overshadow the plight and destruction of the people in Palestine.
On the checkers side, the innocent lives of the people in Palestine are portrayed. They are the ones who bear the brunt of the conflict, facing immense suffering and loss. The checkers represent the Palestinians who have limited moves on a board that chess pieces reign far superior and as a consequence unable to control their own destiny.
The artwork prompts viewers to reflect on the ethical and moral dilemma faced by the western world when it comes to addressing the genocide in Gaza and illegal occupation of the West Bank. Daryl questions how the west can reconcile its own values and principles with the ongoing humanitarian crisis and loss of innocent lives.
Engaging in open dialogue and critical discussions is crucial to finding a path towards resolution which should include a two state solution. The artwork serves as a call to action, urging the western world to confront the uncomfortable realities and seek solutions that prioritise peace, justice, and the protection of human right’s.
